Russian Orthodox Christmas at Malta President’s Palace

On 10 January 2019 the President of Malta traditionally hosted the members of the Russian community in Malta together with their partners and friends at the beautiful Russian Chapel at San Anton Palace on the occasion of Russian Orthodox Christmas.

Present were Her Excellency President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, His Excellency Ambassador of Russia Vladimir Malygin, Hon. Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Dr. Carmelo Abela, President Emeritus Dr. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, prominent representatives of political, social, business and cultural circles of Malta, members of the Diplomatic Corps and the Russian community.

The Director of the Russian Centre for Science and Culture Mr Andrey Muraviev welcomed everyone at the Russian chapel. He pointed out that the Russian culture is an inseparable part of the European cultural heritage and the Russians are always proud to share the gems of the  Russian performing school with their friends and partners.

The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Malta stated that the Russian Chapel at San Anton Palace is a place where two cultures meet, an amazing example of religious and historical connections between our two nations.

The President of Malta in her speech stressed that celebrating Russian Christmas for her would mean not only joy but an opportunity to affirm the relations between Malta and Russia, therefore she wished Happy Christmas to everyone present.

The speeches followed by a piano recital of of Maestro Vladimir Ovchinnikov, the People’s Artist of Russia. For almost an hour the audience was immersed in a dialogue with one of the top Russian pianists who performed The Seasons of Pyotr Tchaikovsky. So powerful was his performance that he received a standing ovation. His encore was Tchaikovsky’s The Waltz of the Flowers dedicated to Madam President

The guests then were invited to proceed to the upper chambers of the Palace where they were offered delicious Russian style refreshments.

This event was jointly organized by the the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Valletta supported by the Embassy of Russia and the European Foundation for Support of Culture.
