Celebration of Orthodox Christmas in Malta

On January 9, 2017, Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Malta, Embassy of the Russian Federation and European Foundation for Support of Culture, under the distinguished patronage of H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta organised a special event in the Russian chapel of the presidential palace San Anton to celebrate Orthodox Christmas.

Among the guests of the evening were the Private Secretary of the President of Malta, the Maltese state and public figures, heads and members of staff of diplomatic missions of Italy, China, Palestine, Great Britain, and other countries, representatives of the Maltese public and the Russian diaspora.

In the opening speech, Chargés d'affaires ad interim of the Russian Federation in Malta P.Dukarev thanked President of Malta for constant support in development of Russian-Maltese relations; he pointed out that such events have a great positive influence on strengthening of the friendly relations between Russia and Malta that count several centuries of history. Mr. Dukarev mentioned also the upcoming 50th anniversary of establishing of diplomatic relations between Russia and Malta, which will be celebrated this year. He expressed the hope that the tradition of celebrating the Orthodox Christmas in Russian chapel of San Anton Palace will continue in future. The chapel was restored a few years ago, by the joint efforts of the Maltese side, and the Russian diaspora.

In his greeting speech to the guests the Private Secretary of the President of Malta Mr. Carmel Briffa spoke about the importance of Christmas as main family holiday and the preservation of family traditions in cultural life of people of Malta and Russia. He also expressed special thanks to the Embassy of Russia, the Russian Centre for Science and Culture and the European Foundation for Support of Culture for the organisation of Orthodox Christmas celebration this year.

During the concert Chopin, Shor, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky’s immortal compositions sounded under the dome of the Russian Chapel performed by Yuri Rozum – famous pianist, People's Artist of Russia and Dagestan, winner of international competitions, soloist of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society, President of the Rozum International Charitable Foundation.

Then a special festive reception was held in San Anton palace’s halls, during which guests have been offered traditional dishes of ethnic Russian cuisine prepared by the Russian cook specially for this celebration.
