For all the Russians the name of Alexander Pushkin is sacred. He is our national poet and the father of modern literary Russian, that same language we have been using with no major changes for about 200 years. To foreign readers to understand better: we can hardly read poems or novels written before Pushkin time. It is almost like a foreign language to us!
Pushkin is like Dante for the Italians, Shakespeare for the British, Dun Karm for the Maltese.
Is Pushkin’s name familiar to you? Well, you might know famous Russian operas “Eugene Onegin” and “The Queen of Spades” which were based on Pushkin’s works… but maybe you are familiar with some other stories and poems by him? Share with us.
